News this week about the sale of the Dakota, Minnesota &
Eastern brought the Canadian Pacific into view for many people.
However, for train buffs, there's already an interest in the Canadian Pacific.
The CPR Empress, a locomotive 2816, serves as a roving ambassador for Canadian Pacific.
The CPR Empress International Steam Excursion is touring through until 22 Sep 2007.
CPR's 2816 is a class H1b Hudson type locomotive built by Montreal Locomotive Works in December 1930. CPR Empress is the only surviving
H1b Hudson and is one of only a handful of preserved and operating CPR steam locomotives in North America.
Here's its remaining schedule in the region:
- 8-9 Sep 2007 (Round trips each day) Along the former Soo Line routes out of Minneapolis to Glenwood, Minnesota. At
Glenwood the 2816 will turn on the former Soo Line turntable, the first steam Locomotive in decades to use it. On Sunday, head east
along the original Soo Line route for the return to Minneapolis;
- 15 Sep 2007 The 2816 will team up with Milwaukee Road No. 261 for a double-headed round trip along the
Mississippi River to La Crosse, Wisconsin;
- 16-22 Sep 2007 The 2816 departs Minneapolis for Calgary via Winnipeg, with overnight stops in Saskatchewan and
Alberta, arriving in Calgary on 22 Sep 2007.
