Clanging Trains Annoy Residents

Cambridge Memorial Hospital.

Cambridge Ontario - Noisy trains are making life miserable for people living near Cambridge Memorial Hospital, an area resident says.

"It's horrendous," Peter Hughes told city councillors last night.

"We're just requesting a noise barrier or the railroad to go someplace else, but that won't happen."

CP Rail owns the tracks that parallel Coronation Boulevard. They're the main route to market for hundreds of cars produced daily at the Toyota car factory. The tracks are also used for moving train cars around to assemble trains that will eventually travel across North America.

"I've seen the same boxcars go back and forth four times... the banging and clanging is terrible," Hughes said.

There's 40 homes in the area, he said.

Ward Coun. Ben Tucci visited Hughes' home Sunday, but no trains were running. While it was quiet, Tucci said he did see deteriorating retaining walls along the tracks.

"There's a safety issue, if the kids can access the tracks."

Tucci said Hughes has been frustrated by CP's lack of response to his complaints. He called for Mayor Doug Craig to arrange a meeting including the railway, Cambridge MP Gary Goodyear, and Tucci.

It's up to Goodyear to push the federal government to make the changes, because it's not the city's jurisdiction, Tucci said.

"This is quality of life for the residents," he said.

Craig said he would set up the meeting but he wasn't optimistic it would produce results, not after how the railway acted in negotiations with Waterloo Region on the railway bridge project planned at Hespeler Road just to the east.

Craig said the railway said one thing early then backtracked later.

"They just have an attitude that's very difficult to deal with," Craig said.

CP Rail officials were not available for comment last yesterday.
