Cause of Propane Leak Investigated

Moose Jaw Saskatchewan - Transport Canada is trying to determine what caused a Canadian Pacific Railway tanker car in Moose Jaw's main yard to leak propane 1 Oct 2007.

The car, which was heading east and carrying a load of liquid propane, was stopped after crews noticed it was venting more than usual.

A four-block area around the rail yard, including nearby homes and businesses, was evacuated shortly before 2 p.m. Roads remained blocked until after 11 p.m. when experts burned off excess gas from the tanker and declared the area safe.

CPR would not release the name of the company that owns the propane.

"We're looking into issues of compliance with the Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and regulations", said Andrea Rudniski, senior communications officer for Transport Canada.

Rudniski did not know when the results of the investigation would be released, but said issues of non-compliance with safety regulations are dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
