Hespeler Road Will Stay Open
Cambridge Ontario - Rejoice! Hespeler Road will not be
shut down for two weeks to build a railway overpass.
The latest construction plan calls for no traffic
interruption when the $21-million overpass is built near the
crowded delta intersection in 2009 and 2010.
Engineers unveiled their revised plan for construction
staging yesterday, delighting regional councillors.
"They've done their very best," Cambridge Mayor Doug Craig
said. "And I think we should be very pleased."
Politicians, businesses and residents had been deeply
concerned about busy Hespeler Road being closed to traffic for
so long.
Instead, traffic is to be maintained through the
construction site, while railway traffic is shifted to new
tracks during a carefully co-ordinated weekend. At least,
that's the plan.
Councillors were warned that Hespeler Road could still be
closed for up to two days if bad weather, unforeseen problems,
or equipment breakdowns frustrate the weekend work.
The much-needed overpass will span CPR tracks near the
Hespeler-Dundas-Coronation-Water intersection. That's where
frustrated motorists are often stuck in traffic while trains
shunt back and forth.
The overpass is moving into final design and
construction. "As most of my friends will say, the sooner, the better,"
said Coun. Jane Brewer of Cambridge.
