Train Delay in Regina Causes Traffic Snarl

Regina Saskatchewan - A Canadian Pacific train kept traffic backed up on Ross Avenue for at least an hour on Friday night, something Kathy Kreklewich didn't think was possible.

"There was no way to back up. We couldn't do anything," the Pilot Butte resident said.

"You wouldn't think they'd be allowed to do that... What if there had been an emergency?"

She was travelling east on Ross Avenue when she arrived at the train crossing at around 7:30 p.m. She was the sixth vehicle to reach the crossing.

Many more vehicles arrived after her, so that the two lanes of eastbound traffic were backed up to Winnipeg Street, a number of blocks away. There are no other streets crossing Ross Avenue between the railway and Winnipeg Street.

While one van was able to get over the mound of snow in between the east and west-bound lanes to leave the scene, others were stuck until 8:30 p.m., said Kreklewich. She could not see any reason for the train to be immobile.

Rick Poznikoff, spokesperson for CP, said the train was delayed on the tracks due to a problem with the signal system further up the rail line.

Poznikoff explained that due to a problem with the system, the signal was not received and the trains had to stop until CP fixed the problem.
