Newly Built Pedestrian Bridge Opens to Public
Thunder Bay Ontario - The new pedestrian overpass at
Brown and Gore Streets that replaced the aged wooden structure is now open to foot traffic.
Westfort City Councillor Joe Virdiramo said the previous bridge was there for almost 100 years and according to the agreement with CP
Rail it didn't cost the city a penny to have the landmark rebuilt.
"This is going to be here for another 100 years so what kind of value do you put on that? And what kind of value do you put in
perpetuity? Many, many people, after we're all gone, hopefully the bridge will still be here and who knows what's going to happen in 50
years in this part of the city", Virdiramo said on Tuesday.
Over a year ago City Council turned down a $600,000 offer from the CPR to demolish the bridge and decided to have the railway rebuild
it.
Virdiramo says in the future he hopes a park will be developed on the other side of the bridge, at the Kam River as part of the
waterfront development saying his dream is to see a pictorial museum at the bridge entrance showing the history of the
site.
