CP Rail Pays Residents After Derailment

Minot North Dakota USA - Minot residents affected by a train derailment and chemical spill more than six years ago are finally getting their settlement cheques.

The Minneapolis law firm handling the settlement says cheques were mailed Wednesday, and should be showing up in Minot mailboxes soon.

A U.S. federal judge approved a US$7-million settlement in a class-action case against Canadian Pacific Railway last fall.

A Minnesota consulting company was hired to determine how many of the roughly 4,000 people who submitted claims in the January 2002 incident were eligible for compensation.

Gordon Rudd, a plaintiffs' lawyer in Minneapolis, says the majority of people getting money will receive about $1,300.
