Derailment in South Edmonton Forces Road Closure
Edmonton Alberta - A number of rail cars jumped the track
in south Edmonton Friday morning, forcing the closure of a main road.
About five cars of the freight train left the tracks on Elerslie Road and 101 Street around 5 a.m., blocking the road to many
early-morning commuters in the growing suburban areas in the city's southeast.
Crews managed to move the cars off the road by about 7:30 a.m., allowing traffic to resume.
However, the road was closed again after the rush hour to complete repairs to the rails and city officials expect that work to take
until 10 p.m.
There were no dangerous materials on the train, and the derailed cars all remained upright, said Mike LoVecchio, spokesman for Canadian
Pacific Railway.
The cause of the derailment is under investigation.
