Wire Stolen from Rail Line
Marathon Ontario - Police say railway crossing signals
were "jeopardized" by a theft of copper wiring at two locations on CPR's main line near Marathon.
Police say two sections of 600-volt wiring, each about 50 metres long, were removed from the tracks in remote areas on
northwestern Ontario last week.
The electrical wires charge batteries that power rail-crossing signals.
CPR spokeswoman Breanne Feigel said Monday an alert system would have notified crews promptly that its equipment had been tampered
with.
Freight trains travelling through the affected area were forced to slow to about 15 km/h until repairs had been
made.
