Elevator Society Takes a Hit in the Caboose
Nanton Alberta - The Canadian Grain Elevator Discovery
Centre Society, the group responsible for Nanton's historic grain elevators, suffered a setback at its 29 Oct 2008 meeting.
At the meeting, society members learned that the caboose they had been working to bring to Nanton this past year is now going to
another owner.
"We no longer have the caboose," said director Randy Hellier. "Because it didn't get moved, they have given it
away."
The announcement came just seconds after society secretary Ruth Messner read an email from Stan Baric stating the caboose would be
moving to Nanton "very, very soon."
The caboose is part of a project to bring three railcars to Nanton to sit on the stretch of track in front of the elevators.
The project is a joint effort between the elevator society and Nanton Heritage Railway (NHR).
Baric has been in charge of the project for NHR for the past year. At one point, Baric had a mover lined up, but that fell through at
the last minute.
"I'm still trying to get (the caboose) back," said Hellier, who is a director with both the elevator society and NHR,
"but it doesn't look good.
"Unless we can pull a miracle off, we've lost that caboose."
The society will work to get this caboose back, but it does have a backup plan on deck - there is another caboose in Cochrane.
However, society directors are not keen on pursuing that caboose as it needs a lot of work to restore it to pristine condition.
The one good thing about the Cochrane caboose is that the society will get it for a tax receipt.
"Let's wait to hear on that one," said director John Berger.
Hellier said NHR is still working to bring three railcars to Nanton.
