Plans Underway to Repair Bridge That Burned Down
Possible Peterborough bridge fire - Date/photographer unknown.
Peterborough Ontario - The East City bridge that was burned down in April is well on its way to
being repaired.
According to Breanne Feigel, spokesperson for Canadian Pacific Railway, the City has signed off on the plan to reconstruct the new bridge. She notes only part
of the bridge is being replaced. Canadian Pacific Railway owns the bridge that runs over the rail tracks.
"We're in the process of ordering the timbers needed, because they are quite large and they take long lead time"
She calls the plan a repair plan.
"Parts of it [the bridge] were okay. The entire bridge does not need to be replaced so we're retaining some of the components that weren't affected by the
fire," she explains.
"The bridge is going to be reconstructed and plans are underway to do so. I don't have a specific timeline. We're in the process of going out to contract
for tender to do the work."
Peterborough Fire Department originally estimated the damage from the 13 Apr 2010 bridge fire to be around $750,000.
The 14-year-old boy charged in connection with the bridge fire was scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice on Monday (21 Jun 2010). But the matter
was put over to 9 Aug 2010 because Trevor Burgis, the boy's lawyer, is waiting on a Section 34 report, which is a medical or psychological assessment under the
Youth Criminal Justice Act.
