CP Detour on SRY

 Photo
This shot is not soon to be repeated as the detour crosses over the CP Mission Sub at the manually controlled Clayburn Interlocking - 27 Jul 2010 A.J. Shewan.

Fraser Valley British Columbia - As some of you may, or may not know, CP had a derailment on their Mission Sub last Wednesday, 21 Jul 2010.

The train had been heading south to a connection with the SRY at Huntingdon (Abbotsford) B.C. when they derailed at Mile 5.1.

External link The CP power ended up being trapped on the south end of the derailment for almost 7 days as CP was only doing clean up and repair during daylight hours.

During the period of the track closure, CP still had a crew using the trapped power to service the local customers and interchange with the SRY.

At the end of the 6 days they had accumulated 63 cars for CP's Coquitlam Yard.

Management wanted the cars and the power back in Coquitlam so a deal was worked out to run a detour train west on the SRY's Fraser Valley Subdivision on Tuesday, 27 Jul 2010.

I had the unique opportunity to chase this for some rare and perhaps historic photos.

For me, this represented the quintessential shot of the day. The Fraser Valley Sub was constructed in 1910 thus celebrating 100 years this year. This substation, named Langley Substation and built for the then BC Electric railway, now stand as both a monument to the history of the railroad and a modern day residence - 27 Jul 2010 A.J. Shewan.
