Montreal Quebec - The Mayor of Montreal is accusing a French-language newspaper of a smear campaign over the sale of the former Viger train station.

The city sold it for $9 million, though La Presse reported that Gerald Tremblay pressured bureaucrats to hide the municipal evaluation, which was much higher.

The building ended up being sold to a developer who donated $1,500 to the mayor's party.

According to La Presse, someone in the Tremblay team asked for the valuation to be removed from the documents of sale.

The mayor says that's because the valuation was completely irrelevant, since the building needed $13 million in renovations.

As CTV Montreal's Rob Lurie reports, the mayor said the whole story is nothing more than an attack on his credibility just to sell newspapers.

"I didn't want to hide anything," Tremblay said Monday.

"We were just happy to sell the building for $9 million."
