Fire Cause Under Investigation
Chatham Ontario - It took nearly two dozen firefighters to battle a relentless blaze that
destroyed a commercial complex in Chatham Thursday night.
21 firefighters from both Chatham stations and the Wallaceburg station fought the fire, which started shortly before 6 p.m. at the plaza at the corner of
Wellington and Harvey streets.
The blaze destroyed Chatham Outreach for Hunger, Morency's Quality Meats, Buns Master Bakery, and Right to Life Kent.
The CP Railway beside the building was shut down so firefighters could tap hoses into another water main across the tracks.
Five CP freight trains scheduled to pass through Chatham during the night were delayed two to three hours due to the fire, according to railway spokesman Randy
Marsh.
He said the delays didn't create any serious problems for the rail carrier.
However, according to a video posted on YouTube, at least one CP freight train passed through the thick smoke.
