Locomotive Restoration on Track
Kingston Ontario - The restoration of the Spirit of Sir John A. locomotive began Tuesday.
The historic train, long a fixture in Confederation Park, is being restored to how it appeared in the 1960s, the last time it was actively used.
The first phase of work involves removing asbestos and lead paint on the interior of the train.
"Engine 1095 is a piece of Kingston's heritage and, like many heritage properties, it does contain designated substances that must be carefully removed
before any further work can take place," Colin Wiginton, the city's cultural services manager, said in a news release.
The project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2011, is set to cost $642,500.
The money was approved by city council last May.
After the harmful substances are removed work will begin on a new foundation.
The actual restoration is set to begin in July.
The locomotive was built in Kingston in 1913.
It was donated to the City of Kingston in recognition of Canada's Centennial in 1967.
