Fire Stops Train in its Tracks
Maberly Ontario - What should be a day of rest turned into an eight-hour battle with blaze for local firefighters Sunday.
Drummond/North Elmsley Tay Valley fire chief Greg Saunders said Canadian Pacific Railway called in a large fire on the tracks shortly after 10 a.m.
The train was still in motion when smoke was noticed spewing from several cars, Saunders said.
"We had three open rail cars full of used railway ties on fire," Saunders said.
The affected cars were disconnected from the rest of the train and positioned at the Bolingbrook crossing of the track at county road 36, engulfed in flames.
Both South Sherbrooke and BBD&E stations of the Drummond North Elmsley Tay Valley department responded to the call first.
The fire continued to rage, so Saunders said crews from Central Frontenac, Lanark Highlands, and the Perth Fire Department were also called to the scene.
Firefighters were on scene until about 4 p.m.
Saunders said the cause of the fire is still not known.
