Spanish Looks at Improving Downtown

Spanish Ontario - The Town of Spanish wants to find options to improve the downtown area and possibly work with the old railway building.

This is the large white building located beside the farmer's market on Highway 17.

"It's been a while since the town addressed downtown improvements. There was an effort 15 to 20 years ago. You have to revisit renewal every so often," says chief administration officer Brent St. Denis.

The town will go over the interlocking stones, the lamps, and the trees "to see what's possible, whether we go to a businesses improvement program such as you had in Elliot Lake or another program. We are not there yet. This is step one."

Public input will also be sought.

The process will also examine what can be done with the old CP railway building.

"The ideas range from tearing it down to fixing it up, but that decision hasn't been made. We will have to evaluate the building to see if it's practical to fix it."

St. Denis says the building was once used as a railway station.

"It was a replacement, not a very handsome replacement, for the building that burnt down in the 1950s. There was a wooden station there, more traditional. I remember watching (the fire) as a little kid across the street."
