McCarthy Repeats as Spike Driving Champion
Pierce McCarthy of Terrenceville, Newfoundland, has repeated as the 2011 "CP Rails B.C. Interior Spike Driving Champion".
It's the third time he has won the same title, also doing so in 2007 and 2010.
Mr. McCarthy competed against hundreds of other CP employees from throughout the B.C. region and came away with a winning time of 17.6 seconds for three
spikes.
He not only won a $300 cash prize but also a trip to the spike driving finals weekend competition scheduled this year for the first time in the United States.
His fiancee, Verna McGrath, was also provided airfare to the competition in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA.
After winning the B.C. Interior event, Mr. McCarthy then competed against finalists from several other provinces and the U.S., finishing well with times of 19
and 15 seconds, respectively.
He has been employed with Canadian Pacific Railway for 23 seasons.
