Teens Arrested for Railcar Robberies
Agassiz British Columbia - Agassiz police arrested two teenagers after five rail cars were broken into last week.
Two men were observed breaking into several rail cars near the Highway 9 rail crossing in downtown Agassiz during the afternoon of 29 Sep 2011.
A witness called police, who attended the scene and arrested a 16-year-old Agassiz boy. The next day, an 18-year-old Agassiz man turned himself into police.
Both now face charges of break and enter, theft under $5,000, and trespassing under the Railway Safety Act.
The two teenagers are known to police. They were released on conditions.
Police say five rail cars were broken into. They contained steel piping, decorative vases, and car tires. Some of the tires were stolen, but located hidden
near the tracks. Neither suspect was in possession of stolen property at the time of arrest.
"The investigation was successful as a result of attentive witnesses, a quick police response, and great team effort between the RCMP, CN, and CP Police
Services," said RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Tammy Hollingsworth. "This is a reminder that these types of thefts do occur and the police are asking the
community to keep their eyes open and report any suspicious activity around railway cars to the police."
