Closing of Mount Stephen Club Questioned by CSN Union

Montreal Quebec - Union leaders are questioning the decision to close the Mount Stephen Club on 23 Dec 2011, less than a year after workers at the historic hall on Drummond St. voted to join the Confederation des syndicats nationaux.

About 70 people are to lose their jobs at the posh restaurant and banquet hall, which celebrated its 85th anniversary this year, the CSN said. The workers agreed to join the union in November 2010, and were poised to ask an arbitrator to impose their first collective agreement next month, as negotiations hadn't progressed with the owner, Tidan Hospitality and Real Estate Group, the spokesperson said.

Tidan couldn't comment immediately Tuesday on the impact of the union on the group's decision to close the Drummond St. club.

"The club had been trying for some time to find a path to profitability. However, despite major efforts, including several millions of dollars invested in improvements to its historic Drummond St. building, the situation had become untenable," a statement said this week.

In 1926, the former residence of George Stephen, a president of the Bank of Montreal, and the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, was transformed into a private club for businessmen. It is used regularly for weddings and other high-end receptions.
