Minivan Hit by Train on St. George St. in London
London Ontario - No one was seriously injured Tuesday afternoon after a CP freight train slammed into a minivan at the St. George level
crossing.
The collision occurred just before 3 p.m.
People who were working nearby dashed out of their offices after hearing the train blow it's horn and the subsequent crash a moment later.
"I went running out to see what had happened," said Hessey Bros. Plumbing and Heating co-owner Lynne Hessey. "There was a big boom."
Steven Hessey said he had been working when he heard the horn.
"There was this big crash and when I came out I saw all this destruction," he said waving his arm at the van that had been crumpled in on the
passenger side.
Around it, the back door, which had been pulled off to allow rescue workers to extricate someone, and other pieces large and small littered the road.
The large raised crossing lights were also destroyed.
"It shows you how long it takes for a train this size to stop," said London Police Sgt. Dave Ellyatt. "You can see that it took a whole block
and a half before it could stop."
The train finally began to move again after about 45 minutes.
