VIA Passengers Put on Buses After Freight Train Derailment
Smiths Falls Ontario - VIA Rail has ordered a dozen buses to pick up hundreds of passengers affected by the derailment of a freight
train in Smiths Falls.
Five cars of a Canadian Pacific freight train derailed just before 1:30 p.m. near the Smiths Falls train station and has blocked the tracks in both
directions.
Smiths Falls police are on the scene.
Two TSB investigators are also at the scene, said Johnston.
The investigation is expected to take several hours.
VIA said 10 passenger trains and some 800 passengers are affected by the delay.
While some trains were simply delayed by the collision, passengers on other trains had to be transferred to buses.
The freight train was carrying one car holding "dimethycyclohexylamine", a fuel additive classified as corrosive and potentially
flamable.
But Transportation Safety Board acting director Rob Johnston said the car is upright, intact, and of no danger to the public.
There are no reported injuries.
