Alberta Man Now Facing Federal Charges in Jump from Railway Bridge

Lethbridge Alberta - A southern Alberta man is facing federal charges in an incident involving his jump off a railway bridge with a parachute.

Canadian Pacific Railway has charged Johnny James Korthuis with two counts of trespassing on railway property under the Railway Safety Act.

His lawyer made a first appearance on the charges in Lethbridge provincial court on Friday and had the case adjourned to 26 Apr 2013.

A video recording the jump in January shows him walking out onto the High Level Bridge in Lethbridge wearing a parachute, then jumping more than 95 metres to the river valley below in something called base jumping.

Korthuis, who is 25, is well known in the extreme sports community for his cycling demonstrations that promote sports equipment and cycling safety.

Korthuis was fined $287 for the stunt and has said he knew jumping off the bridge was illegal.
