Canadian Pacific Container Train
Derails in Northern Ontario

Wanup Ontario - A container train operated by Canadian Pacific derailed in northwestern Ontario Sunday after a train trestle collapsed, sending a number of cars tumbling into the Wahnapitae River, a company spokesman said.

The derailment occurred near Highway 537 in Wanup, Ontario, a small community about 15 miles southeast of Sudbury, Ontario, according to the Greater Sudbury Police, which issued a statement Sunday.

Calgary-based CP has sent a response crew to the scene, Ed Greenberg, a CP spokesman said.

He did not yet have details on the number of cars that had derailed or their contents.

He said the northbound container train derailed at about 8:00 a.m. Eastern time Sunday.

Container trains are typically intermodal, carrying consumer goods.

No injuries were reported and police were advising residents not to consume water until it was determined if hazardous materials were among the cars' contents.

A spokesman for the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said the agency is deploying a team of investigators to the area.

This latest derailment is CP's fourth in the past three months.

The three previous derailments involved oil spills, one in the U.S., and the other two in Canada.
