Train Derailment Near Ignace
Ignace Ontario - At around 12:30 a.m., Saturday morning, an eastbound CP train derailed with 14 grain cars east of Ignace.
Spokesman Salem Woodrow said in an e-mail, "Crews are on site and continuing to assess the situation. There were no injuries to our crew, no environmental
concerns, and no public safety issues."
She added a full investigation has been launched, and the first priority is the safety of the public and our crew.
The company anticipates the line will be back in service Sunday morning.
Railway safety has been an important issue, since the Lake Megantic disaster claimed 47 lives earlier this year.
Municipal leaders have been calling for closer ties with railways, and the federal government is taking a closer look at tank cars used for transporting
oil.
In the fall, residents of Fort Frances were evacuated after a rail derailment near the mill spilled toxic chemicals that may have created a danger to
residents.
Last week, railways were under scrutiny, after questions in the House of Commons about unreported incidents.
Calls were made to the railway involved in the accident near Ignace, but representatives from Canadian Pacific were not immediately available for
comment.
