Restore Passenger Rail Service Between Calgary and Edmonton
Calgary Alberta - With all this talk of high-speed trains, I wonder why the return of traditional passenger train service between
Calgary and Edmonton isn't being considered.
It may not be as sexy as a high-speed train, and travelling at 100 km/h would take longer, but I'm sure we could make up for the leisurely pace with comfort,
convenience, and reasonable fares.
A modern passenger train with roomy seating, bar service, a dining car, observation cars, and private staterooms for families or business travellers might make
the trip worth the extra time.
City central stations, parking, car rentals, and/or links with transit at either end could be designed into an integrated transportation system.
Twinning the tracks between Calgary and Edmonton would eliminate most (if not all) of the freight versus passenger scheduling issues at a fraction of the cost
of high-speed rail.
Is the 90 minutes we would save with high-speed rail worth the extra billions in cost?
