Woman Falls from Welland Train Bridge
Welland Ontario - A woman was rescued after she fell from a train bridge over the Welland Recreational Canal Sunday night.
The woman was crossing the swing bridge north of Ontario Road at about 8:40 p.m. when she fell between two beams and landed on an earth-covered concrete pier
about four or five metres below, injuring one of her legs in the process.
It took firefighters and paramedics nearly an hour to carry the woman to safety.
Niagara EMS spokeswoman Carrie Beatty said the woman was stabilized by paramedics and transported to nearby hospital.
Welland Fire and Emergency Services acting Platoon Chief John Infantino said firefighters lowered a ladder from the railway tracks to reach the
woman.
Reading a report prepared by Platoon Chief Dan Marr, Infantino said emergency personnel raised the woman back to the bridge deck using a harness, secured her
to a stretcher, and carried her to an ambulance on Canal Bank Street.
Infantino said firefighters have responded to similar calls at the bridge in the past.
"There are large gaps between the railway ties, so you can fall," he said.
"This girl here was walking across the train bridge in the night, straddling the railway ties, and she did fall between two."
