Schreiber Ontario - A group in Schreiber hopes to find a long-lost locomotive at the bottom of Lake Superior.
 
Steam locomotive No. 694 derailed near Schreiber more than 100 years ago and slid down a 20-metre embankment into the water.
 
Three crew members died in the accident.
 
Now, the Lake Superior Steam Locomotive Group is working with divers to find the wreckage.
 
Spokesperson Doug Stefurak says the locomotive is an important part of the community's history.
 
"The crew members were from Schreiber," he said.
 
"You know the township ought to somehow memorialize this accident."
 
The divers will hit the water on Saturday, along with a videographer, to begin looking for the locomotive, as well as its tender and two cars.
 
Stefurak said he thinks it would be worthwhile having photographic evidence of the steam engine where it rests in its watery grave.
 
"We heard about this engine when we were young, when quite a few of us were hiring on the railway here in the mid 1970s," he said.
 
"We were all in our 20s. And we had heard about this accident which is way back in 1910. Over the decades that we worked, we went by the location thousands of times. It happened so long ago I guess it just faded into history."
 
The Steam Locomotive Group formed four years ago with the goal of getting a steam locomotive in Schreiber to commemorate the town's history.
 
Stefurak said he'd love to see engine No. 694 raised from the water to sit in the town, but he acknowledges the expense to do so might be prohibitive.
 
The goal of the search will be to photograph the train and possibly gather artifacts for the local railway museum.
