Man Rushed to Hospital After Train Collides with Semi-Truck Near Moose Jaw
Caron Saskatchewan - Around 16:05 on Monday, a westbound Canadian Pacific (CP) train collided with a tractor-trailer in Caron, west of
Moose Jaw.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, which RCMP have identified as a 55-year-old male, was transported the Moose Jaw Union Hospital with non life-threatening
injuries.
STARS Air Ambulance attended the scene, but according to the RCMP, the man was transported to the hospital via ambulance.
The accident "occurred at a level crossing and there was a truck on the crossing when the train came through," said Rod Appleby, fire chief of the
Caronport Fire Department.
Salem Woodrow, a CP spokesperson, said no crew members on the train were injured.
"We would like to stress this is a third party cause. The focus of the investigation is what led this tractor-trailer into the crossing," said
Woodrow.
She told the Times-Herald that 21 empty cars and two locomotives went off the tracks, most of which were empty when the collision occurred.
As such, an RCMP news release stated that there is "no leak of any hazardous materials" as a result of the incident.
The tractor-trailer was, however, set on fire because of the collision, but the Caronport Fire Department immediately put it out.
The collision occurred at a rural road with adjacent signs indicating it was a railway crossing.
Members of the Moose Jaw Fire Department, Moose Jaw Police Service, and Moose Jaw EMS also attended the scene.
RCMP and CP police are jointly investigating the cause of the crash.
