Car-Train Crash Blocks Rush Hour Traffic at Busy South Winnipeg Crossing
Winnipeg Manitoba - A CP train is moving again after a crash during morning rush hour caused a major traffic delay at a busy crossing
that has no crossing arms.
At around 06:30 a car travelling west crashed into a southbound freight train at Bishop Grandin Blvd and Lakewood Blvd.
The train was roughly 100-cars-long and was an empty grain train.
The train was so long that it also stretched back across Fermor Avenue, blockading the major routes for people in Windsor Park, Southdale, and Island
Lakes.
There were no injuries to the crew or the occupants of the car, the rail cars were empty and did not derail.
The crash closed Fermor Avenue, Beaverhill Blvd., and Bishop Grandin while emergency crews attended the incident.
At around 08:15 the train was moving again.
There are no gates at that crossing but CP told Global News in a phone interview that there will be crossing arms installed in the near future.
Winnipeg police and CP rail are still investigating.
Residents in the area said they have seen accidents and traffic hold ups plenty of times before.
"You're right in the middle of the city, people are hustling and bustling, then all of a sudden some trains pop out of nowhere and yeah, accidents
happen," said Robert Phaneuf.
It's not the first time a car and train have collided there.
A similar scene unfolded on the morning of 16 Dec 2013 which tied up traffic for a couple of hours.
There were no serious injuries.
Just four days later, a locomotive caught fire on the tracks just south of that same crossing early in the morning.
