Black Bear Cub Killed by Train
Banff Alberta - A male black bear cub was struck and killed by a Canadian Pacific train on the evening of 12 Aug 2015.
According to Parks Canada, a mother bear ran across the tracks and the cub followed but did not make it in time to avoid the train.
Parks moved the carcass a safe distance away from the tracks after chasing the mother away from the scene.
The bear is thought to be the first confirmed to be killed by a train in Banff in 2015, while at least three other black bears have been struck and killed on
highways in the mountain parks this year.
CP and Parks are in the process of conducting a five-year-long study of grizzly bears and railroad mortality that will conclude next year.
Railroads are the number one source of grizzly mortality in Banff, Yoho, and Kootenay national parks, and the study is hoped to inform short-term and
long-term solutions for reducing grizzly bear train collisions.
