Windsor Ontario - CP, led by CEO Hunter Harrison, continues to pursue profit over public safety.
Transport Canada has been informed by the railroad's union that management had told them to stop conducting mandatory brake tests on trains originating in
Moose Jaw.
This recent event follows an investigation in which CP allegedly did not apply the required brakes on an oil train parked on a mountain grade in
B.C.
It was brake failure that led to the horrific events of July 2013 in Lake Megantic in which a runaway oil train exploded in that town and killed 47
people.
One week after Transport Canada cited CP for failing to meet safety regulations in Saskatchewan, CEO Harrison had the temerity to dismiss government
regulations.
Asked on CNBC as to how big of an issue rail safety is, Harrison replied, "We don't need government in our business."
Clearly, they do, as their publicly stated goal to move trains faster for more profit means that management is telling safety-conscious railroaders to cut out
legally mandated steps.
That is both greedy and approaching criminality.
Beyond pressuring your representatives on this issue (CP travels thru Windsor), I encourage CP stockholders to divest their shares until the company makes the
necessary corrections.
