Canmore Alberta - An adult male grizzly bear was killed on the railway tracks within the town of Canmore on the weekend.
Early Saturday morning, wildlife officials with the province received a report that a bear had been struck by a train on the tracks, just across the road from
the helipad.
"A male grizzly bear was killed," said Jay Honeyman, human/wildlife conflict specialist with Alberta Environment and Parks.
"It's an unknown bear. We didn't know he was around."
The grizzly bear, a threatened species in Alberta, is at least the fourth human-caused death in Alberta so far this year.
Two of those bears were killed in the Bow Valley.
On 20 May 2016 a cub was hit and killed by a motorist on the Trans-Canada Highway near Lacs des Arc.
There have also been several black bear deaths on the nearby highways, including one on the Trans-Canada Highway last Friday and another on Highway 40 in
Kananaskis Country earlier in the spring.
Two black bears have been killed on the Trans-Canada Highway in Banff and Yoho national parks.
Another black bear was hit and killed by a train on the railway tracks in Yoho National Park in May.
Parks Canada is working with CP on a joint action plan to reduce the number of wildlife deaths on the railway tracks, looking at everything from grain on the
tracks to other food along the railway line.
The project doesn't include Canmore, but it's expected the results will be shared widely once they are completed this fall.
Honeyman said it doesn't appear that there was any food on the tracks.
