Banff Alberta - An investigation is underway into the cause of a train fire near Banff Monday night, 21 Nov 2016.
Banff's fire department was called to the Banff train station about 17:45 after getting reports of a fire on a locomotive on of one Canadian Pacific Railway's
freight trains travelling east.
Fire Chief Silvio Adamo said the freight train was carrying empty grain cars and the fire did not spread beyond the train engine.
"The engineer had noticed smoke and flames as they were approaching Banff," he said, noting the locomotive was unhooked and pushed to the siding near
the train station.
"There were flames coming out the side of the locomotive when we arrived. The fire was contained within the locomotive."
Canadian Pacific officials say the locomotive had mechanical issues that caused the fire.
"An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing," said CP spokesperson Salem Woodrow.
Banff fire department responded with three trucks and 18 fire fighters, and had the fire extinguished using foam and water.
"We had it under control quickly," Adamo said.
"It took about 15 minutes to half an hour to make sure everything cooled down within the compartment."
