Medicine Hat Alberta - A Canadian Pacific train rolling through the city caught Danny Wilson's eye Wednesday night.
"All those sparks flying and grinding noises looked like the train was on fire," he said in an email.
Wilson captured video and sent it to CHAT News.
Although it's shocking to see, a spokesperson for CP said the whole thing was planned.
It's a special rail-grinding train, used to maintain the surface of the rails.
"The sparks visible in the video are from the grinding heads making contact with the rail surface and shaping its profile," Mallory McCredie said in
an email.
"Properly profiled rail minimizes wear on both rails and car wheels, reduces fuel usage, and helps support safe train operations."
McCredie adds that the special trains contain water sprayers as a precaution against grass fires.
