Calgary Alberta - We start with another pending strike at Canadian Pacific (CP) where more than 3,000 rail workers have given formal strike
notice effective at 22:00 EST Tuesday night.
The workers have been without a collective agreement since the end of 2017.
"CP is offering more of the same contract language that workers just voted to reject a few hours ago. The company clearly isn't serious about reaching a
negotiated settlement and delivering on their promise to do right by their employees," said Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) President Doug Finnson
in a release Saturday afternoon.
"CP has continually changed directions during negotiations with little evidence that a settlement was ever possible. We have given CP every reasonable
opportunity to negotiate and avoid a strike, but sadly, that has led us nowhere," echoed Steve Martin, a senior general chairman from IBEW.
Meanwhile, CP said over the weekend is has started shutting down its rail network again.
"CP has commenced its work stoppage contingency plan and will work closely with customers to ensure a smooth, efficient, and safe wind down of
operations," the network said in a statement, adding it will continue to work with the unions.
Labour Minister Patty Hajdu was in Calgary over the weekend to monitor the ongoing negotiations.
She has not said yet whether the federal government will order the workers back to work should a work stoppage occur.
