Beleville Ontario - It looks like Belleville has avoided a fight with Canadian Pacific (CP) over funding the rehabilitation of the
Herchimer Avenue rail crossing in the city's east end.
The city plans to reconstruct Herchimer Avenue from Dundas Street to the Bayshore.
The hitch has been who would pay for the rail crossing section, and the city was taking the issue to the Canada Transportation Agency.
Director of Engineering Rod Bovay tells Quinte News the city reached a deal with CP Tuesday, with CP applying for federal funding under the Federal Transport
Fund.
Bovay says this "closes the gap" between what the city thought it should pay and what CP was willing to pay.
Under the arrangement the city will pay $150,000 of the $500,000 cost, but Bovay doesn't expect the work to go ahead this year.
City council had approved a two separate tender system, one for north of the track, and one for the southern section.
Bovay expects this to still go ahead in that manner.
The work will include a multi-use trail to join up with the Bayshore trail at its east end.
He says CP plans to remove a rail siding at the crossing site and there will be improvements to the signal system.
