The Long View at Strangmuir

Strangmuir Alberta - Strangmuir is a small place with one house and a large feedlot with a capacity of 24,000 head of cattle.

It is 36 miles east of Calgary on the Canadian Pacific Brooks Subdivision.

CP has a 7,100 foot siding here plus a short backtrack.

At one time there were four wooden grain elevators here, all were gone by 1976.

At the east switch at Strangmuir, where we were on the afternoon of 27 Aug 2018, one can get a great view of the whole of a long train coming up the grade from the east or going down the grade towards the east.

This westbound empty crude oil train, about 1 mile in length, and an eastbound empty potash train, almost 10,000 feet long, were two of the five trains we saw during our 5 hour stay in cloudy, windy, conditions.

Even with the long view at this location, a train disappears from view before the tail end comes into view.
