Comox Vancouver Island British Columbia - I am writing to express my support for a re-opening of the railway line between Victoria and
Courtenay.
After reading a news article regarding a meeting between mayors and the Province of B.C., I am feeling renewed hope for the possibility of this actually
happening.
I have appreciated and enjoyed taking this train from Courtenay to Victoria and back in the past, and have missed it since the service has been
suspended.
There are several practicable reasons for restoring the rail service.
It would offer a more energy-efficient route for the transport of people and goods up and down the Island, a point that is even more important since the bus
lines have recently discontinued service, and also since our population is growing.
It would offer a viable choice for seniors and people with disabilities who are unable to drive the route.
At present, there is only one option to reach Victoria, and that is via the highway.
It makes sense to have an easily accessible alternative that could be used in the event of unforeseen closures of the highway, be it due to an accident or
natural disaster.
The rail line may also become an additional attractive means of transportation for tourists.
Since the rail line corridor already exists, it is a relatively inexpensive way to provide an additional route, as the land acquisition is not a factor in this
case.
I urge you on behalf of your constituents to become an active force in attempting to re-open this valuable public service.
Haidee Rae.
