Three CP Workers Killed
in Massive Derailment

Field British Columbia - Three Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) workers have been killed in a massive derailment east of Field, B.C., near the Alberta border.

According to CP, the westbound freight train left the tracks about 01:00, Monday, just outside the town some 200 kilometres west of Calgary, with three crew members on board suffering fatal injuries.

"It is with great sadness that CP reports that three crew members on board were fatally injured in the incident," said a statement from CP.

"Our condolences and prayers go out to their families, friends, and colleagues. A full investigation will take place to determine the cause of this incident."

According to the company there is no threat to public safety and no dangerous goods were on board the train.

Sources told Postmedia the three killed were the train's conductor, engineer, and a trainee.

Dozens of cars left the tracks, some rolling down an embankment into the Kicking Horse River, sources said.

Eric Collard, a spokesperson with the Transportation Safety Board, said between 40 to 60 cars are believed to have derailed, adding the crash zone is fairly remote.

"The only access to the site is by hi-rail (a vehicle that operates on rail tracks)," said Collard, noting two investigators are already on site, with another pair en route from Calgary.

"It could take some time to do an assessment, we're hoping to do an update Tuesday in Calgary."

British Columbia's environment ministry confirmed the train was hauling grain, and the locomotive is in the river.

There is no immediate word of fuel or other contaminants entering the water.
