Montreal
Quebec - An unexpected development occurred on Wednesday at Kahnawake, where protesters have maintained a blockade on the railway tracks since
8 Feb 2020.
The band council published a news release saying the protesters had given Canadian Pacific (CP) permission to inspect the tracks in the
afternoon.
The press release said the Peacekeepers and other members of the community will supervise the inspection.
No other information was provided concerning any eventual lifting of the barricade.
The protest blocking the tracks has shut down the EXO commuter train line that runs between Montreal and Candiac for three and a half weeks.
It has also prevented CP from transporting merchandise on that section of track.
CP obtained an injunction ordering the withdrawal of the barricade, but it has not been applied.
The government of Premier Francois Legault has indicated it is reticent to have the Quebec Provincial Police intervene.
The premier sparked controversy with his suggestion that his caution was because of the presence of military weapons on the Mohawk reserve.
One other blockade remains in place in Quebec.
A barricade at Listuguj, in the Gaspe, has paralyzed the Societe du chemin de fer de la Gaspesie, which has more than 150 train wagons waiting to
pass.
