Canada - As part of the global movement to pay tribute to emergency workers on the front lines in the ongoing battle against
COVID-19, one Canadian railway is starting its own daily salute.
In an internal memo obtained by the Toronto Sun, Canadian Pacific is directing all locomotives on its network to sound a long whistle blast at 19:00 local
time.
"The sounding of CP whistles joins the global movement to recognize critical health care and front line workers during these unprecedented times. Our
whistles also remind communities of the service the CP family provides North America every day," reads the memo sent to all operations employees Friday
morning from Mark Redd, CP's executive vice-president of operations.
The salute is to continue daily until further notice.
Railway workers are among the tens of thousands of essential workers transporting goods and commodities across Canada and the United States as much of the
world shelters-in-place against the deadly respiratory disease.
The whistle tribute is the same afforded to veterans on Remembrance Day, when all trains across the network come to a halt and sound their whistles at
11:00.
Trains, in Friday's memo, are advised to continue operating during the daily 19:00 tributes.
