Broken Rail May Have Led to Train Derailments

Guernsey Saskatchewan - Track maintenance could be the culprit when it comes to a pair of train derailments near the town of Guernsey in a three month stretch late last year and early this.

The Transportation Safety Board (TSB) has written a letter to Transport Canada (TC) regarding rail safety.

It says in both cases the suspected causes appears to be related to a broken rail and that one of the letters says there have been seven derailments involving crude oil since 2015 in which "derailments have happened because of a broken rail, broken joint bars, or other track infrastructure condition."

TC is working to update track safety requirements and are inviting the industry to work with them.

They have also implemented speed limits for trains when in certain areas or if they are carrying dangerous goods.
