Windsor Ontario - CP's recent acquisition taking full ownership of the Detroit River rail tunnel from OMERS for over $300 million
demonstrates the company has the will, legal maneuvering skills, and means to do much more.
Anyone who has been stalled patiently waiting in traffic at the Tecumseh Road rail crossing (near Crawford Avenue) as a lengthy freight train crawls its way
into the main yard understands the full meaning of frustration, not to mention the adjacent connector line.
Traffic backups stretching from Ouellette Avenue to Crawford often create a congested hornet's nest in all directions.
We have the engineering talent to alleviate such bottlenecks, Walker Road at Grand Marais Avenue, plus Howard Avenue near Ypres, are two examples.
Municipal elected officials must work together with the provincial government and other stakeholders to put an end to this everlasting nightmare.
Our economy is strengthening, population growing, rail freight volumes rising (prior to COVID-19), so planning officials must keep pace.
I believe development and construction of a bypass in the area of Tecumseh and Janette Avenue, although challenging, is not out of the realm of
possibilities.
Apparently, the main rail yard in the area is immovable, so our options are limited.
An underpass or overpass would solve the problem.
I feel businesses along the curvy stretch of Tecumseh between Janette and Crawford would not suffer, in fact they would prosper.
Customers would not be impeded by blocked-in traffic delays.
Perhaps this problem has been discussed many times, but no one committed themselves to a solution citing it as cost-prohibitive.
But to me it seems money is no longer an issue and only hardcore desire is lacking.
