Ensign Alberta - A Canadian Pacific Railway train carrying residual amounts of liquid sulphur, propane, and anhydrous ammonia derailed
northwest of the southern Alberta hamlet of Ensign.
Around 01:35, Monday, a CP freight train derailed and CP was immediately dispatched to respond to the site about 107 kilometres southeast of Calgary, the
railway said in a statement.
An Alberta emergency alert was issued Monday morning for the Vulcan County area, warning people about the derailment located approximately half a kilometre
outside of Ensign.
An evacuation wasn't required by residents while CP managed the situation.
In total, 39 train cars were derailed including eight that last contained liquid sulphur, three that last contained propane, and three that last contained
anhydrous ammonia.
However, no leaks or injuries were reported.
"CP will be flaring the impacted rail cars throughout the day and expect to have the rail service resuming by 17:00," the alert stated.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) deployed a team of investigators to assess the situation and cause of the derailment.
According to a TSB statement, investigators were collecting information, photographs, interviews with the crews, and any other possible witnesses to what
happened.
The cause had not yet been determined by Monday afternoon.
Vulcan County posted online that three rail crossings along rural roads were blocked.
"Please stay clear of the area to allow crews to work," posted the county.
