Swift Current Saskatchewan - Construction on a nearly 70-year-old bridge east of Swift Current is
nearing completion.
According to the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, the eastbound Canadian Pacific Railway (CP) overpass on the
Trans-Canada Highway, 4 kilometres from the city, is expected to be finished in October.
The bridge work is part of a $19 million provincial project that included the westbound overpass being reconstructed in
the summer of 2021.
Steve Shaheen, the senior communications consultant for the Saskatchewan Ministry of Highways, said the October
timeframe hinges on weather conditions.
"Once the bridge is completed, it's expected to last between 50 and 75 years," he said.
The eastbound bridge being the elder of the two also needed some slight realignment to accommodate for Canada's longest
highway.
"Typically as time goes on there are some things that require some improvements to meet today's transportation
requirements," he said.
