Alberta Premier Danielle Smith's Railway Dining Car Restaurant is Up for Sale
14 June 2023

High River Alberta - The railway dining car owned by Premier Danielle Smith and her husband is up for sale.

"This is a very unique one-of-a-kind restaurant opportunity! It's a beautiful, fully-restored rail car which offers diners an intimate dining experience," says the listing.

Located in High River where Smith and her husband, David Moretta, make their home, the Dining Car is made from a restored Canadian National Railway car, decommissioned in the 1980s.

"Take a trip back in time in our railway dining car. Savour our homestyle cooking using fresh local ingredients and our own herb and vegetable garden," says the website.

It's the spot where Smith, over the weekend, posted a photo of herself working the dish pit because of a broken dishwasher.

The restaurant, which features a herb garden out back, which Smith herself tends to, could be yours for a cool $365,000.

The rail car was built in 1947, and was a coach on a CN rail line.

So why is it lettered Canadian Pacific?

In 1965, the restaurant's website says, it became a dining car to serve increased traffic during Expo 67.

It was used on the Transcontinental line until it was purchased in 1989 by a volunteer group and restored as a restaurant.

It opened in 1993 and has been in use ever since.

Smith and Moretta did an overhaul of the restaurant in 2018, expanding the commercial kitchen, and restoring the decor, which exudes a 1960s vibe.

The price includes the sale of the car itself and a 20 year land lease.

"Ideal for a chef or husband and wife team. Menu concept can be changed!" the listing concludes.

Smith's office did not immediately respond for a request for comment, nor did Moretta.
