Portage la Prairie Manitoba - The "Pine to Prairie Relic Run" finished its journey while
riding through Portage la Prairie in the middle of it all.
Four old cars that drove from the Ontario border to the Saskatchewan border raised money to put a roof over the tree
planting car, a historic railway car that for over 50 years advocated for planting trees on the prairies.
The total cost for the roof is about $40,000, leaving them more money to raise.
In 1920, the Tree Planting Car started cris-crossing the Canadian prairies, educating children and adults on the
virtues of planting trees.
It was a classroom on wheels.
The final year of operation was 1973 when the Canadian Pacific Railway donated the car to the Manitoba Forestry
Association.
By that time, it had travelled over 263,000 miles and had been visited by over 1.5 million people.
In November 2022, the association moved the car from Sandilands to the Manitoba Agricultural Museum.
