Nuevo Laredo Mexico - The Nuevo Laredo international rail bridge will be inaugurated in early February, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced.
During her Thursday morning press conference, Sheinbaum said she met with the president and CEO of Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC), Keith Creel, the day the company announced that construction was complete.
"Construction is finished, it has all the permits from Mexico, there are some permits yet to be obtained in the United States, but ideally we will be inaugurating the bridge in February," said Sheinbaum.
"CPKC is the only rail company that has the capacity to move goods from Mexico to Canada. It's a company that mirrors the USMCA in a certain way. Nuevo Laredo is the main customs facility in Mexico," she said.
On Wednesday the company announced it had finished the works on the second section of the project.
"The completion of this internationally significant project more than doubles our cross-border freight capacity at North America's largest international trade gateway," Creel said in a release.
The works were started in 2022 by Kansas City Southern, before its merger with Canadian Pacific.
The US$100 million bridge over the Río Grande is 1,170 feet long and links Nuevo Laredo in Mexico's Tamaulipas state and Laredo in Texas state.
The bridge will be called Patrick J. Ottensmeyer to honor KCS's late chairman and CEO, the company stated.
