Once coaled CP 2317 moved east to an open area to blowdown the boiler. This blast of steam is used to clean out the mud ring around the bottom of the boiler above the firebox where sludge accumulates. On this locomotive the blast of steam and water blows out sideways but some engines are modified to blowdown vertically between the rails.
